SM57 on stage?

Postby gizeh68 on Sat Sep 08, 2007 3:33 pm

Hi all again,

Obviously the SM57 is a very versatile studio dynamic mic. But can I take it from the studio into my practice space to sing from as well, or will i get way too many plosives?

thanks.

You will if you sing close to it and don't use a pop filter.

Use a pop filter and you should be fine.

People have been doing it for 40 years, why should you be any different.

Well a 58 is much better for live vocals, because it's easier to use then a pop filter + 57. You can do it with a 57 if you are careful though. In general the 57 is one of the most popular mics in history for live sound, and the 58 the most popular for vocals.

I never find the need for a windscreen with a 57 live. I sometimes like them better than a 58 because you can get that much closer to the capsule. More low end! Just more options. Stepping back 6 inches works too.

I use SM57 a lot on stage, because I have more of those acess than SM58s. and rarely bother with the pop filter, mostly because most of the vocalists rarely get that close to the mic to begin with.

I always have problems with vocalists getting way too close to the mic. With a 57 a lot of vocalists would probably have it half way down their throat haha.

I always get my beard/'tache stuck in the grill of a 57 whenever I use one live. Very painful... Much prefer a regular 58 for the pain factor alone!!

probably a 58 will stand up a whole lot better to vocalists who like to be touching the mic when they sing........

I've sung live into a 57 before. And I was eating the mic the whole time, and singing at massive volume. Sounded great!

Why, to the International Mic Eaters Convention, which sent two reps. I actually ended up in a very positive writeup on their semi-annual newsletter!
