2 Mics for numerous applications. SM57/Studio Projects B1

Postby USSR on Tue Jul 03, 2007 2:48 am

Im going to be buying 2 microphones and a mixer very soon. Im gonna be micing things such as vocals, acoustic guitar, snare drums/percs, and amp cabinets, i might also be sampling the occasional non instrumental sound.

Ive got a budget around 200-250 dollars for the two mics, and i was thinking. Should i get the SM57 and the Studio Projects b1? because they're both versatile mics. Or sohuld i get one for versatility and then one thats more specific, i.e. an sm57 and then an AT vocal mic. Or should i just get one more expensive mic instead of 2 cheaper ones (Rode NT1, for example.

I dont have a pro room, and i doubt that i'll have to use two mics at once. Any thoughtS?

You'll probably always find a use for the 57, it's a really versatile mic.
I'd go with the B1 over the AT mic, I had an AT2020 at one point and wasn't the happiest with it.
If you have the money, those two mics would do you just fine. Handy to have a nice/versatile condenser and dynamic.

What preamps will you be using these with? A interface or low end pre might not have the juice to push a 57 and get great results with it, making a condenser more ideal. Although the condenser will pick up a good deal more room and ambient noise. Does quality of what your recording matter ALOT, or just a tad bit. Do you want it to be decent or above average?
