What better for vocals: Sennheiser MD421 or EV RE20??

Postby jefframras on Thu Dec 21, 2006 1:20 pm

Which is the better mic for recording male vocals, the Sennheiser MD421 or the EV RE20? Which gives a warmer, more detailed, overall better sound for vocals? Also, are the older models of the MD421 better than the new ones? I have heard rumors that they are.

I'd go with the RE20. Actually, if there was a law passed that said "You may only own 1 (one) microphone for vocal use at any price" It'd probably *still* be the RE20.

Interesting!
Good thread indeed. Should be a poll!!

I just ordered a 421 for my floor tom. I want an RE20 as well because I've been told they are both workhorse mics. The main reason I bought a 421 was because I needed a good mic to compliment my 57 on a guitar cab as well as a great tom mic.

I find my 421 does a better job at picking up the low end on my guitars than the 57! A great purchase, I'd say.

Where in Ontario are you located? I'm in Ottawa, myself.

I'm in Windsor. I bought the 421 off ebay since L&M didn't have any in stock and an ebay seller had one for about $40 off plus free shipping.

Sad part is that guy forgot to ship it and will probably complain once I give him a negative feedback. O well.

I'd be scared to buy a mic like that (or any mic really) off ebay from the shipping alone. I fear the UPS/FED EX guys throwing such a beauty around like that.

I always think if I give bad feedback that the seller will do the same to me (even though I've been good about paying, etc...). For me, it really comes down to this: I'd rather have good feedback than leave negative feedback for someone else.

Just why I may not leave bad feedback. I really hate the ebay feedback system because of crap like that. I pay perfectly everytime and usually give the seller the benefit of the doubt, but when they deserve bad feedback they can just get angry and give me negative as well. I HATE that.

I have them both and love them both. When i choose which to use I think proximity effect. If I want it, the MD421 wins. On the RE20 they pretty much killed it in the design. Vocal= RE20. Other stuff=md421. My .02. YMMV
