FMR's RNP, or...

Preamps are one of the MOST important links in the audio chain. The better ones are unavoidably expensive. So before you plunge, learn about what is out there so you can make the Right choice for your studio and your budget.

FMR's RNP, or...

Postby adhesive on Sun Aug 06, 2006 10:08 pm

I've heard nothing but good things about the RNP, so I'll probably get one in about a month. But first...

Is there really any worthy competition for someone (me!) who needs a 2-chnl pre in the 4-500 buck range?

(What I really wanted was the P-Solo or Grace, but after looking in an honest mirror, I really can't do without 2 channels, and can't afford to spend a grand)

In that price range, I don't think there's anything that really compares on a dual-channel unit.

Yeh, it's tough. They aren't making a large profit on those RNP's as they are dual channel. DIY preamps are the best value but for a good dual channel you are still looking at around at least 400$USD and then a chasis to put it all and you still have to build it.
Happy music making!

Hey, in the past week or so I tried looking about to buy the RNP and learnt that they are unavailable until January 2007 due to some safety regulations that need to be met and they need to change something or other. I'm in the UK so this may not apply to you but I thought i'd let you know.

Wow, that's quite a bummer.

Off to ebay we go, I guess.

Can anyone verify this?

The RNP seems to still be available from the UK website I buy stuff from, but the RNC is listed as "currently unavailable", which is a real pisser as I was literally just about to get one! Maybe they just still have stock of the RNP and it will also become unavailable when they run out.

I'm curious about the RNP's sound compared to a stock Mackie VLZ pre.
I'm looking to look around for a good preamp that I can use on some really important parts of a mix (snare, kick, vocals, guitar). As you can see, I will be using an SM57 on two of the 4 main things. I heard the RNP is great for that mic.

Can anyone offer some insight?

I like the sound of the RNP over the Mackie XDR. To my ears its quieter, richer and has more gain.

I have never used a Mackie, but I have an RNP. An SM57 with a pop screen through the RNP is hands down the best combination for my voice, over an SM7b, KSM27, KSM32 and C1. It sounds pretty darn good at the 12th fret on my acoustic guitar too. I haven't tried it on drums yet.
Harvey Gerst really liked the SM57 through the RNP on his voice too.

The RNP DI on my Pbass sounds great on big band style swing songs where I need a walking bass line, but not as good as my Sansamp on Country/Folk Singer/Songwriter stuff. It's not bad, just a different tone.

I have mentioned this unit in a couple other threads and sound clips are available in the link that Controlfreak provided in the top pinned thread.

The DAV BG-1 is without a doubt, the best sounding sub $1000 I have ever heard, played with, or owned. It compares very favorably and in some instances sounds better than my Great Rivers MEQ-1NV, Chandler LTD-1 and Pendulum Audio Quartet.

It is available only from England and sells for a delivered price to the US for about $750. They are made to order and the current delivery time is about 2 weeks. It is a TWO CHANNEL Unit and sound amazing on acoustic guitars, vocals, overheads, etc.

[darn] dude, were you born into money or something? Wish I had the kind of jack needed to have a stable of gear like that! If you ever feel the need to share the wealth with a dirt-poor SOB like me, then sell me that Great River for $250 and some naked photos of my wife!

In the meantime, I'll keep trying to decide between the onboard pres on the Konnekt 24D, Ultralite and GO46... *sigh*.
