What do you think about the Sennheiser MD421-U-4?

Because I'm new to recording sound (I've been playing sound for a long time) I would like to ask your opinion about two mic's I am borrowing from my friend.

It's the Sennheiser MD421-U-4 (made in germany) and I am going to use it in a bedroom to record basically amps and maybe double and acoustic bass.

What is your opinion about this mic?

I have one. planning to get 4 more

a workhorse in the studio. I found it quite useful in Bass, Drums, and Acoustic. I also use it with my Bass Cabinet.

I used one of the predecessors at two different radio stations, and was not impressed; those older models had a very evident response curve. but I don't know if the new models are still as colored; I've been avoiding them for over 15 years.

Thanks! I know you like the RE20 Dugz, I really have to try one. Say, in one post you mentioned that the RE27 was a bit better sounding than the RE20. I was wondering if you had any more to say on that. It looks like the RE27 is no longer made.

I believe the RE 27 is a little brighter than the RE 20.

I've used the MD421-II with pretty reasonable results for upright bass. It's not as nuanced as a nice condenser mic but in a small room I think a large diaphragm dynamic like the Sennheiser makes more sense for that application. My approach is to close mic the bass and I use a lot of bass traps in the room.

Good luck.

I love the MD421. especially on amps. They are a colored microphone. I don't know the differences between the U4 and MD421-II. If they are similar to one or another for the purposes you use it for they can be an excellent microphone provided the colour suits the context of your song. Its also should be fine for acoustic bass. I do however not like it on vocals.
