Best Hard disk recorder $700- $1000

Here's the place to talk about digital multi-track recorders like the Yamaha AW series, Roland VS series, Akai DPS24, Alesis, Korg and Tascam machines. Lets add ANALOG tape machines too like Teac, Nagra, Akai, even Dokorder reel-to-reels, portastudios, old cassette 4 tracks, and anything that layers tracks. Historians and pros from the Golden Age are welcome.

I got the Korg about a year ago and learned a lot about recording with it. There are good and bad things about it, but the main thing for me is that it's fun to use, it's reliable, and it has pretty much all the features you could expect in its price range.

Good: 24-bit resolution, 12 tracks (more with bouncing and virtual), phantom power, I like the way they did the buttons and screen, plus some extra features I think the other ones don't have.

Bad: Can't feed audio directly into my PC (no Coaxial out), USB transfer requires extra steps (you can't just plug in, click and drag), Maybe they could have made it easier to name the songs (like with a computer editor or something).

this is a decent machine. it has its idiosyncrasies like most machines but it is workable. to start with; if you are a song writer you need a rythym track to play to otherwise your foundation is weak. you get more feelfrom your playing. Ithas pads if you want to create your own beats or use the patterns provided. i like machines that have examples - drum beats, guitar patches, effects, mastering effects etc. like this one to get you going fast. then you can tweak if you want.
i don't look for things to be specific , such as Jimi,s guitar sound , just usable and they are w/zoom. If you do a drum track, add reverb and insert an effect patch with compression while you bounce it to a stereo track, you will have a decent punchy drum sound. Listen to Halcyon Daze myspace.com/thursdaystartstheweekend at4033 recorded vox in a bad basement with blankets and acoustic 12 string(cheap)All else is in the box
i'm sure i'd feel much worse if i weren't under such heavy sedation

I found the USB really easy to use on the Korg 888. I suggest reading the manual and exiting the Korg 888 before shutting it down or using the other functions. I had no problem with 'click 'n drag' and I'm using an old iMac (OS 9.2)!

me thinks those small footprint Boss machines are wonderful
songwriting sketchpads. I had sold mine, but picked one up on ebay
for like $100

with the korg d888 ive heard a lot of complaints about the gain
and how it doesnt turn on really until its 3/4 of the way up and
then its overkill. are there a lot of problems with that?

The D888 indeed needs a boost. The pre amps work, but thats it. That however, would be my only complaint. Easily fixed with an added pre amp. Even a really cheap one boosts the signal considerably. That being said, you have eight inputs and the sound quality is unbelievable. Extremely portable, and user freindly for those of us that are fairly illiterate with computers. But again, the trim setting has to be almost all the way up to get any volume. No headroom what-so-ever.
