Hacked needs one mic... just one!

Postby hackedface on Mon Sep 05, 2011 2:36 pm

Hello, SC!

Okay, I want to track an acoustic guitar, a mandolin, a didgeridoo, male and female vocals, possibly some ambient spaces (water, birds, traffic...), and banging on pots and pans.

Not all at once: overdubbing is my route.

I have a Tascam US-122mkII with its preamps, and just let it be known that I'll be tracking either on headphones or a stereo system, and "mixing" on said stereo system (if I ever need real mixing done, I'll wait until I can afford a couple hundred a track, and then beg the services of EH or someone like that.... lawl).

With all that out of the way: I want to buy my first real mic.

With emphasis on "my" and "real". My friend has this TS-ending mic that came with his consumer keyboard, which wasn't that bad I guess. It's not mine tho :ar! . Recently, upon request for "any mics maybe you don't use", my pastor gave me this mic that had been sitting in the pulpit 4ever, which "didn't work with the sound system". I got results out of that thing by turning up the gain on my AI all the way, and then using noise removal, and then EQ'ing and compressing and boosting and adding reverb until you could almost sort of here it by turning the speakers way up. ^^

Okay, so I want to buy a mic (or have one gifted to me, lawl). I just want ONE mic to hopefully do everything that I mentioned way up at the top of the post, without needing any more gear to make it work. My budget is right around $100. I think I've got it down to two contestants: the SM57 Dynamic and the Audio-Technica AT2020 Condenser. I lean toward the 2020 because I've read that with Phantom Power you need less gain, and therefore it may sound better than a dynamic on budget pre's. Also the vocals are the most important to me, followed by acoustic instruments, with percussion and amp-micing being least important.

After I buy my midi controller and the mic, I don't expect to spend any more on music gear for a very long time, as I'm in my HS senior year and don't plan to make a heck of a lot of time for my beloved hobby in college or beyond... probably.

Thoughts?

Cascade M20. If you need to stay "cheap n' cheesy" it's the least-cheesiest mic for the money.

Really? That came out of nowhere lol. But I'm open to it, for sure! The vocal sample on the mic's page sounds fantastic, too! Thanks for your reply and suggestion... I'm seriously considering it.

I still think you're going to need a 57 eventually... And a SM7 or something really vocal-friendly. But if you need a "put stuff in front of it and hope it sounds kind of like the source" then you could do much worse than the M20. Between Cascade and Avant, I'm surprised anyone else even tries to make budget-friendly mics anymore.

Well, if I win Elpimpo's contest, maybe I'll have a free 57 on my hands :-bd

And maybe one day I can be one of those guys with lots of money but not enough time to do it at home, so I can rent other people's studios. Eh?

Get the mic these guys suggested.

Then, if you happen to have a pawn shop in or near your town, you're bound to find several SM57's somewhere in there for next to nothing....even though the 57 is a tank of a mic, i'd definately plug it in at the shop and make sure it works.

@a-d-o That's an excellent idea! Why didn't I think of that? I'll plan a trip to the pawner right away.

Okay, so maybe I actually need two mics...? You've convinced me

BUT AFTER THIS I"M DONE OKAY GOSH

Another question: What can I do about recording space? I'm thinking I want one of those portable vocal booths. But otherwise there is seriously no such thing as a quiet room, or acoustic treatment, in my life. I can invite the voxers or guitarists over and turn off the AC for a few minutes, close the window, probably, but that's the best I can do, that I know. Any way to optimize this easily, like maybe draping a blanket around the mic and source? ??

idk lol it's late, I'll look it up.

Thanks for your help, guys. Imma try to get a mic from the parental unit for my good ole' one-year-closer-to-death day. I'll ask them for a condenser and then try to get a 57 myself. That should cover my needs... I guess *yawn*... *finishes homework for class @8:45am*

Okay, so I ended up buying an electronic piano that I'm really happy with (most epic controller ever, except for the lack of knobs and wheels), which ended up putting the microphone stuff on the back burner.

But now I'm getting antsy. I'm ready to buckle and get an sm57 so I can get my vocalist friend in here (we're working on her song-writing project). Maybe I can ask for a LDC for Christmas lol...

Can't be a mistake, right?

I'd go with a 58 instead of a 57, but in a pinch, the 57 will do the job also (but will need a more substantial windscreen).

Can you really call the SM57 a budget mic if it needs a $500 preamp?
