Bass Trap Diary *Updated 6/23/09* (control rm pics)

Here is how I built my Bass Traps

The company that I work for moved buildings and were throwing out their cubicle partitions (3 floors worth)..I opened one up and it was OC703.. I felt like I won the lottery...
Image
This is just one truck load.. I loaded up for almost 2 weeks and there was still some left over
Image
Another angle
Image
With the metal frame.. which I had to remove (Hammer)
Image
Image
Exposed OC 703.. Had to cut alot of fiberglass with an exacta blade.. Itchy stuff. I used a dust mask and a long sleeve shirt and pants (no shorts!!!) .. Did I mention that that stuff is itchy....
Image
Wood from Home Depot.. They cut it to my specs for 81 cents a cut
Image
Approx 6 inches deep.. to be filled with 4 inches of OC 703 and then 2 inch gap to space it off the wall
Image
Dry wall screws..
Image
Image
Screws in place
Image
Frame
Image
Frame is done
Image
Frames are done.. Sizes (6X2, and 5X2.5)
Image
It's wrapping time.. (Burlap, got this for free too)
Image
Measure and cut fabric & Fill with OC 703
Image
Just to make sure I still have my precious "air-gap"
Image
L bracket to secure panel

"Like a glove"....
Image
Corner Cut..
Image
Fold in.. then wrap
Image
Tuck fabric in with flathead screwdriver
Image
Staple
Image
Trim Top & Bottom Edges
Image
Febreeeze those Mutha's !!!!!!!!!! And bake in the beautiful San Diego Sunshine!!! 75 degrees in February....
Image
All done..........

Very very nice. Looks like you hit the jackpot.

One thing though, I'd be leery of posting a picture on the net containing your license plate number....

Most good quality cube walls are made with 703 or 705. I left mine in the metal frames and use them as gobos in the tracking room to tighten up the sound when needed or to seperate two acc guitarists that need to track together if needed.

I wish I could.. I actually gave alot away to friends and sold some locally on craigslist for real cheap. I actually used the proceeds to buy 6 GIK Tri Traps and TWO 244's...

I recently moved and had to redo the my room.. At my old place the panels were not framed and just hung to the wall.. I wanted to do things right this time so I built frames so I can mount it like a picture frame when I move again..

They sure do...and we can do just about anything on 'em. John Scrip (Massive) suggested that we do a picture of Sonnex on one, which I think would be hilarious. We'd probably get sued, but it sure would be funny right up til then...

I have seen those and I envy anyone who has one. Are they customizable? Like could I send a picture to have printed on it? oh dear god that would be sweet. I would have my favorite artists on each one.

Yep. I do the basic formatting from the Savannah office; if it's a particularly difficult fit then we send it to the graphics shop, which adds a bit to the cost ($30-60), but yes...you can do anything you want. :alien:

Yeah there are too many options... I was thinking something like this to cover the bottom half of a black bass trap...

Check this out...it's a Rock Crowd 242. The inside red line is the face of the panel...the last 2.5" all the way around would fold around the sides and be stapled to the frame. The pic fit pretty well...I had to stretch it just a tad.

I was thinking more like across 2 panels mounted vertically.. Do you guys just sell the fabric with the image??

EDIT: turns out we do sell just the fabric w/the image on it. It'd be $150 per 32"x56" section to fit a 2'x4' panel.

question for you Frank, is there a difference from GIK putting an image on the fabric compared to taking it to any old place to have them print it on? Im figuring that it would be different cause the reflections from a standard print on fabric...

Yes. We use a different process...dye sublimation...that gets the image on the fabric without reducing its transparency acoustically.

Nice one. I've been drawing up some ideas for my own home-made bass traps and you have just made practically the identical design which I have in mind for mine! So, thanks for saving me the bother of making up a prototype :)

They look great man. I was thinking with mine of cutting out some holes roughly 80mm diameter on the side to reduce weight and add some side absorption. Was there a particular structural reason you didn't decide to do this?

Hey Paul,

Thanks for the kind words... 2 of the taller bass trap (6X2) are going to be placed in a closet (sliding door removed from rail) so I wanted something with to cover more space vertically. As you can see they stand on their own so I can appropriately move them around while tracking.

I am really not a DIY person and I do not have the proper tools to cut holes in the frame.. since 4 of the panels are for reflection points I decided it was not worth the extra work..

There are some real cool designs in the thread below.. This should give you plenty of ideas:

Would they anyhow be any better, if they were without sides?
I mean, the wood reflects a little bit, right... And the way I see it, theres really no reason why you couldn't just put a piece of 703 on a piece of wood, wrap it up and hang it...?
Any thoughts?

That would be fine. You'd have to figure out how to do it in a way that didn't wreck the look of the panel, but there's no acoustic reason why you can't or shouldn't.
