I know you got a good deal on your material, but I imagine the cost and time involved to make one of those is not worth it over Giks 120$ super chuck traps. How much material did you use to make it?

He's got about $10 total in materials in those traps, since he got the fiberglass from cubicle partitions (free). How is that not worth it?

NIce work, BTW.

Yeah I got all my OC 703 (fiberglass), wood and fabric for "free.95".. (see pic below)The only thing I paid for was those L brackets.. Call it 5 bux..It took me a total of 8 hours to make the 2 traps.

I am big fan of GIK, infact I have 6 tritraps from them and two 244's.. They look soo much nicer than mine.. ...

I don't know but I kind of like doing this stuff.. I must of caught the DIY bug.. Here are the other traps I made

So do you know any way of telling if a cubicle partition has proper insulation for this application? I am forever seeing people giving away entire offices on craigslist and would love to do what you did and pick up some free 703 or such for making traps. Great find!

You know, I would fasten two or three of the untouched cubicle partitions together to make some really decent gobos. That is, if you have need or use for gobos :D Seems like a few layers thick would also make a decent cloud (I think that's what the call the thingy on the ceiling over the mix position).

The wrap job is a bit on the sloppy side.

I’m just pointing that out cause I’m jealous of your free material though!

Seriously, good job and it should work great.

Sooooorrry :(

Just kidding no offense taken...

It may actually look sloopy from that angle but the "ear" looking thing was actually intentional... I stapled the fabric about 4 inches to one of the front legs..

This gives it a roman coulmn type look.. I think it kind of looks like a cobra... I dig it !!! Cobra Traps!!!! 8)

Even if he bought the material it would take approximately 48 square feet to fill one of those things and he can easily get rockboard 60 for $1.23 a sq'. That's $59.04 + tax and the wood materials, which we could say could be around $10 a trap. That puts him at around $75 a trap so far. The fabric, if he bought it, could be obtained for $6.75 a yard and I estimate that it would take a little over a yard of fabric to cover each trap's sides so I would go with approximately 10 yards of fabric which would be around $67.50 divided by eight traps and that's another $8.43 + tax per trap which would be a grand total of approximately $83.93 per trap. I see that as worth it indeed.

I think that's pretty accurate, and from a cost standpoint it jives on a percentage basis with what we've already said it would cost to make a 2'x4'x2"/4"/6" panel. Of course, you're not adding labor into the equation. If you did, and charged per hour what you'd have to to buy skilled labor to make the Tri Traps the way we make them, I guarantee that you'd find yourself well over $130.

Nice job man...those look great, and I love the way you're recycling every part of the partition. Very smart. I also like the idea of making gobos out of those things.

Yeah I got three of those partitions left still in the metal frame.. 2 of them are HUGE.. about 7 feet tall and 3 feet wide... The other one is about 5ftX4ft... I just kept them in the event I need to track drums.. somewhere else... I doubt that will happen b/c my setup is not excatly mobile...

I really have no space to it besides my garage.. I pretty much just use EZ drummer for my drum tracks.

oh yeah I also made 3 clouds out of the material.. No Frame, I am using S hooks and chains to suspend the clouds.. The one over my mix position is 4inches thick and the other two are only 2 inches thick.. I will try to post pictures later..

My room still not ready to show...

Stay tuned...

I'm thinking about building some superchunks, and was wondering what the reccomended dimensions are.

The fiberglass I get would be 1200mm x 600mm x 50mm. Which means I could make 8 squares of 300mm x 30mm. Is this too small for effective bass trapping?

The face of the trap needs to be 600mm x 1200mm...really can't be much smaller than that.

Thanks for the reply Frank. 600mm accross seems pretty big. Apadua's are only 466mm accross, and mine would be 424.

To be clear, I'm talking about cutting the fiberglass into triangles and stacking them up.

Would you say cutting the blocks 600mm x 600mm would be the best way to go?

600mm x 1200mm is roughly 24"x48" across...that's exactly the way we do ours. I know there's a way to cut 24"x17"x17" triangles out of 2'x4' batts.

If I'm on the right track here, there's a lot of 'waste' cutting a 17" x 17" square, because you only get 2 from the slab.

If thats the case, would I be better just cutting bigger squares to use up all the slab in one go, instead of having cutoffs? Bigger triangles just means lower frequencies absorbed, right?

Or is there some cunning way to get 3 squares that I can't figure out?
