Recording Ambient Tones, Acoustic or Electric

I want to be able to create steady ambient tones as background for some of my music, but I'm not sure I can do it with my sub-basic setup. I'm able to create the sort of tones I want with my guitars and amps (no MIDI out with my guitars), though the sustain isn't anywhere close to what I'm imagining. I use Audacity for recording - could I use that to capture a bit of the tone I'm looking for and stretch it out? Think Enya. I'm not comparing my music to hers, but those are the kinds of syrupy synth tones I'd like.

I'm guessing the most sensible solution is to go out and buy a stinkin' keyboard, but my apartment is tiny and I'm strapped for space! Is it just stubborn and dumb to not buy one if Enya-esque is the sound I'm looking for? Could the guitar/software combo be versatile enough for me?

get a soft synth. saves alot of space. And you can get one of those tiny midi keyboards with like 20 keys to control your synth. If you want to create synth sounds do not bother with trying it on the guitar.
