Multiple mics = lagged recording?

How to Mic and Mix a drum kit, types of kit--Acoustic, electronic, metal vs. maple. Cymbals, hammered, sheet or cast. Also let's discuss World Percussion. If you bang on it and it makes noise, it's in.

Multiple mics = lagged recording?

Postby clangez on Wed May 19, 2004 11:39 am

Hey guys,
I'll start by given the specs of what i use at the moment: -

Computer
P4 2.4G, ASUSP4PE, 512mb RAM, 40G HDD 7200
Soundcard: M-Audio 2496 audiophile
Mixer
Behringer UB1204 (configured based on tweaks guide alt3-4 as my input into the soundcard)
Sequencer: Cubase SE

Basically everthing is working to perfection (with this exception). I record all tracks individually. There is a system my drummer and i follow: -

1) record basic drum tracks (with metronome) through Rode NT1a
2) Bass and guitars rhythm sections
3) Vocals
4) re-record complete drums tracks to add fills
No FX processed is any of the tracks

The problem arrives in step 4, i noticed that when i record with the NT1a that i dont get enough bass drum and i cant mix the snare separately. So i add 2 Audio technicas, 1 for the bass drum and 1 underneath the snare.

For some reason, the tracks lag when i use 3 mics through the UB1204 into Cubase. It throws the whole song off. I can easily move the tracks a little backwards to compensate, but id rather not, cause the tracks still dont seems right.

Any suggestions to what the problem is? (Its not my drummer being outta time) I hear him play with the tracks, and its perfectly in time without the lag.

Anyways, thanks for any help

This is a tricky problem. Did you let cubase profile the soundcard? How is the drummer monitoring the tracks when overdubbing?

My band is using SX untill we can get logic and macs and sometimes, (even though at the moment all the drums are on one track) the other tracks slip out of time, I think it could be the laptop we're running it on is too slow though...
