My Sessions with Ana

A sad, true, story. I want you to read this so you hear and feel these tracks like I do. I met Ana in the summer of 1986 at Les Amis Cafe in Austin. Les Amis was sort of an artist-bohemian coffee house, where many Austin musicians would meet and talk (and work). I dared her to come to the studio and sing some tracks. On the surface, Ana appeared to be a somewhat flighty, flirty, artist chick. Youthful in appearance, with the strangest taste in clothes, and often wild hairstyles. And chased by scores of men. (She was quite beautiful). I remember thinking I'd be lucky to get a minute of her attention. But she took me up on the dare.

During our first session it was immediately evident that we clicked musically. When she sang, she was coming from a place of...shocking depth. Ana had a musical soul that was centuries old, in sharp contrast to her external appearance. For me, always a deep thinker as well as a musician, it was like I won the lottery. We recorded about 40 songs over the next year. Each began with a discussion, often lasting hours, of issues and events and feelings that were current. Sometimes we'd work from my poetry, other times she'd scribble down ideas and we'd revise them as the song went on. Sometimes she just made stuff up out of thin air and I'd guide the words into verse.

Ana is no longer with us. I made a promise to her I would release our work to the public. I am happy to say that, 13 years later, I have fulfilled that promise. While recording the sessions I knew we had some high audio art here. But it wasn't till after she was gone that it became clear that to her, these tracks were something more. It was the message she was leaving us with.

The recording were made on an analog 4 track and mixed to quarter inch reel to reel. I have digitally remastered all the tracks in Logic Audio 4.0. Where possible I went back and added new sounds and effects. The result, I feel, is outstanding. I was able to clean and massage the tracks and make them shine with depth and dynamics that far exceeded the quality of the original reel masters.

It is with great pleasure that I offer you this special collection of songs.
